The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

Summary

  • The single most traded question on the prediction board right now is not about crypto. It is the Federal Reserve's decision on 16 September, carrying $86.2M with $5.93M changing hands in the last twenty-four hours, six times the next most active market. It prices no change at 57.5 percent and a 25 basis point increase at 42.5 percent. A cut prices at 0.7 percent, which makes a hike sixty-one times more likely than a cut. A week ago that hike leg sat at 30.5 percent. Bitcoin is at $80,956, up 4.2 percent today and roughly 27 percent since early August. Its 2026 upside ladder repriced higher at every rung through the same week the hike odds climbed twelve points. Both of those moves are readings of the same world, and only one of them resolves on a fixed date.

Note: All market prices are as of 4 September 2026. The FOMC decision resolves on 16 September, so these figures will move considerably between now and then.

1. The most traded question on the board is a Fed meeting

The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

The decision carries $86.2M in total volume. No change prices at 57.5 percent on $21.4M, a 25 basis point increase at 42.5 percent on $17.5M.

Then the part worth noticing. The 25 basis point decrease leg prices at 0.7 percent and carries $24.0M, more volume than any other leg in the book. A 50 basis point cut prices at 0.1 percent on $10.6M.

Those are not live positions. They are the residue of a view that traded heavily on its way to being wrong, and they are a reminder that volume records where a price has been rather than where it is.

2. A hike is sixty-one times more likely than a cut

The current target range is 3.50 to 3.75 percent. The board prices the next move as up, and prices it as a near coin flip against no move at all.

For most of the last two years the entire question was when easing would begin. It is now whether tightening resumes this month or next.

3. It repriced twelve points in seven days

The July FOMC minutes recorded that markets were pricing roughly a one in three chance of an increase going into that meeting. The contract sat near 30 percent through most of August.

Then Jackson Hole. Chair Kevin Warsh said underlying inflation trends had not meaningfully improved and that the Fed has work to do, describing elevated prices as needing to be the central focus. The contract has gained twelve points since.

Context for how divided the committee already is: the 29 July decision to hold was a 9 to 3 vote, with three members dissenting in favour of a quarter point increase. The June dot plot had nine members projecting at least one hike in 2026 against eight projecting no change.

4. Futures and prediction markets do not agree

This is the most interesting number in the article and it is easy to miss.

CME FedWatch, which derives probabilities from fed funds futures, has been quoted between 57.5 and 66 percent for a September hike over the past week. The prediction market prices the same outcome at 42.5 percent.

That is a gap of fifteen to twenty-four points on a single decision twelve days away.

The two are not measuring quite the same thing. FedWatch is an inference from the pricing of contracts on a rate range, and it moves with the whole curve. The prediction contract is a direct binary that resolves on the announced change in the upper bound. But they are close enough to the same question that a gap this wide means one of them is going to look wrong on 16 September, and it is unusual to be able to watch that resolve in public.

5. The cutting cycle has been priced out entirely

The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

The market on how many cuts arrive in 2026 carries $50.8M. Zero cuts prices at 88.8 percent. One cut prices at 8.5 percent, two at 2.5 percent, and everything beyond that is under half a percent.

Almost every macro argument made about crypto in the past two years has rested on rate cuts arriving and liquidity loosening. That premise is now priced at roughly one in nine.

6. October does not release the pressure

If September holds, the October meeting prices no change at 70.5 percent, a further increase at 26.5 percent and a cut at 4 percent.

So the easing case does not recover next month. Across both meetings the board prices tightening as the live risk and easing as the tail.

7. Oil is the mechanism, and it is already moving

The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

WTI has already printed $90 this month, so that contract is settled. Trading up to $100 prices at 32.5 percent, $110 at 9.5 percent and $120 at 3.2 percent. Falling back to $80 prices at 35.5 percent.

That $120 level is not arbitrary. J.P. Morgan Wealth Management has said that if the blockades persist and reserves cannot cushion supply, crude could climb toward $120 from around $80 in early August. Their strategists have already moved their base case to a 25 basis point September hike, citing supply shocks tied to the Iran conflict and doubts about the Fed's inflation credibility after July's hold.

This is the chain that connects a shipping lane to a crypto portfolio, and every link in it is priced.

8. The market has been wrong about the blockade four times

The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

The market on the US announcing an end to the Iranian blockade has run through four deadlines. 24 July, 31 July, 15 August and 31 August all resolved no, with nearly $10M traded across them.

What remains prices 30 September at 16.5 percent, 31 October at 35.5 percent and 31 December at 60.1 percent.

Each failed deadline has pushed the energy shock further out, and each one has kept the inflation pressure on the Fed for longer. If you want a single upstream variable to watch ahead of 16 September, it is this one rather than any US data release.

9. Crypto rallied straight into it

The Market Says the Fed Might Hike in Twelve Days. Crypto Is Rallying Anyway.

Bitcoin trades at $80,956, up 4.2 percent today and roughly 27 percent since early August. Ethereum is at $2,513, up 4.6 percent today.

The 2026 Bitcoin ladder moved with it. Touching $85,000 now prices at 80.5 percent against 68.5 percent a week ago. Touching $95,000 prices at 43.5 percent against 37.5 percent.

So through the same seven days in which the hike contract gained twelve points, crypto's upside repriced higher at every rung. One of those two readings is going to look poorly calibrated after 16 September.

There is a version where both hold. A hike that is already fully anticipated can pass without incident, and a Fed seen as credible on inflation can be read as reducing tail risk rather than adding it. But that is a specific argument, and it is not the one most of the market is making out loud.

10. Forty-four million dollars sitting on zero

Return to the cuts book one more time, because it contains the largest pile of stranded capital anywhere on the board.

Eleven legs, from three cuts through to twelve or more, each price at 0.4 percent or below. Between them they carry roughly $44M. The eleven-cut leg alone holds $5.26M at a price of 0.1 percent.

That is the accumulated cost of a two-year consensus, still sitting on the ledger. It also explains why the book looks deep and reads misleading: $50.8M of volume, of which the overwhelming majority is on outcomes the market has abandoned.

Before treating any book's size as a measure of conviction, check how much of it is on legs that can still happen.

What this adds up to

The board is pricing tightening as the live risk into a meeting twelve days away, with the hike leg up twelve points in a week, no cuts at all in 2026 at 88.8 percent, and the mechanism visible in an oil market that has already printed $90 and a blockade that has outlasted four deadlines.

Crypto has rallied 27 percent into that. Both things are true at once, and only one of them has a resolution date.

Two things to watch. The gap between FedWatch at 57 to 66 percent and the contract at 42.5 percent, because a divergence that wide on a binary this close does not usually survive to settlement. And the blockade market, which is the upstream variable that has moved the Fed pricing all year and has been wrong four times running.

Where to watch it

Every market in this article is live on ApeX Omni, where Polymarket's order books are integrated directly: the same liquidity and the same settlement source, minus the KYC. The board carries the Fed decision alongside the oil ladders, the blockade deadlines and the Bitcoin strike ladders, which means the whole chain from a shipping lane to a crypto price sits on one screen with the volume behind each leg visible.
